Treadmill Speed to Pace: km/h and mph Explained

At 10 km/h, you are moving at 6:00 per kilometre. At 6 mph, you are moving at 10:00 per mile. Before changing the belt speed, check which unit your treadmill uses: those two display numbers describe different speeds.

Read the unit before the number

A treadmill speed display usually expresses distance per hour. A display of 6 km/h is not the same as 6 mph: 6 mph equals about 9.66 km/h. Look for the unit on the display or in the machine’s settings or manual.

A training plan may instead use minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile. That is pace, the time needed to cover one unit of distance. The treadmill converter translates between these representations without assigning a training intensity.

From km/h to minutes per kilometre

Divide 60 by the speed in km/h. At 10 km/h, 60 ÷ 10 = 6 minutes per kilometre. At 12 km/h, 60 ÷ 12 = 5 minutes per kilometre.

The answer is in decimal minutes. At 8 km/h, 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 minutes. Half a minute is 30 seconds, so the pace is 7:30/km, not 7:50/km. Multiply the decimal remainder by 60 to get seconds.

From mph to minutes per mile

Use the same relationship with miles: 60 ÷ mph gives minutes per mile. At 6 mph, the answer is 10:00/mile. At 8 mph it is 7:30/mile.

To compare a miles-based treadmill with a kilometre-based plan, first multiply mph by 1.609344 to get km/h. Then divide 60 by that result for minutes per kilometre. The calculator performs both steps.

Turn a target pace into a setting

For a target of 5:30/km, convert 30 seconds to 0.5 minutes, then calculate 60 ÷ 5.5 = approximately 10.91 km/h. A machine limited to 0.1 km/h increments cannot reproduce every pace exactly; the displayed conversion is still useful for choosing an available setting.

For 9:00/mile, 60 ÷ 9 gives approximately 6.67 mph. Be careful not to enter 9 km/h simply because the pace begins with 9.

Calculate the distance of a session

Distance equals speed multiplied by time in hours. At a constant 10 km/h for 30 minutes, the distance is 10 × 0.5 = 5 km. At 6 mph for the same duration, it is 3 miles, approximately 4.83 km.

For intervals, calculate each constant-speed block separately and add the distances. Two 10-minute blocks at 10 km/h and 8 km/h total 3 km before any warm-up, recovery or speed-change time. A single constant-speed estimate does not model those transitions.

What the conversion does not tell you

This is a unit conversion, not an outdoor-equivalence model. It does not adjust for incline, estimate effort, validate a treadmill’s calibration or prescribe a setting for your fitness.

If your watch disagrees with the treadmill, converting the numbers will not identify which device is accurate. Keep the measurement source consistent when comparing sessions, and separate arithmetic from coaching decisions.
