Running Pace vs Speed: How to Convert Between Them

Pace tells you how long one kilometre or mile takes. Speed tells you how far you travel in an hour. Faster running means a smaller pace number and a larger speed number. At 6:00/km, for example, your speed is 10 km/h.

Pace and speed describe the same movement

Pace uses time divided by distance: 30 minutes ÷ 5 km = 6 minutes per kilometre. Speed uses distance divided by time: 5 km ÷ 0.5 hours = 10 kilometres per hour.

Neither is inherently more accurate. They are different units for the same average when they use the same distance and time. A discrepancy usually means a unit, time basis, rounding choice or measurement differs.

Pace and speed: what each number means
MeasureTypical unitsFaster means
Pacemin/km or min/mileFewer minutes per kilometre or mile
Speedkm/h or mphMore kilometres or miles per hour

Convert pace to speed

Speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in decimal minutes per kilometre. For 5:30/km, use 5.5 minutes: 60 ÷ 5.5 = approximately 10.91 km/h.

Speed in mph = 60 ÷ pace in decimal minutes per mile. For 8:00/mile, 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph. Keep the distance unit consistent throughout.

Convert speed to pace

Pace in decimal minutes per kilometre = 60 ÷ km/h. At 9 km/h, 60 ÷ 9 = 6.6667 minutes. Multiply the fractional part by 60: the result is approximately 6:40/km.

For mph, the same operation produces minutes per mile. At 7.5 mph, 60 ÷ 7.5 = 8:00/mile.

Convert kilometres and miles without changing the run

One mile equals 1.609344 kilometres. Multiply seconds per kilometre by 1.609344 to get seconds per mile. Divide seconds per mile by 1.609344 to get seconds per kilometre.

For example, 6:00/km is 360 seconds per kilometre. Multiplying by 1.609344 gives approximately 579.36 seconds per mile: about 9:39/mile. You have not slowed down; the mile is a longer distance.

Average pace is not the average of every pace number

For the whole run, divide total elapsed time by total distance. Suppose you run 1 km at 5:00/km and 2 km at 7:00/km. That is 19 minutes over 3 km, or 6:20/km. Averaging 5:00 and 7:00 would incorrectly produce 6:00/km because the two portions have different distances.

Choose elapsed time if you want pauses included. Using moving time instead produces a different average. State which measure you are comparing before drawing conclusions from two runs.

Avoid three common input mistakes

Do not enter 5:30 as 5.30 decimal minutes. Five minutes and thirty seconds is 5.5 minutes. A calculator with mm:ss input avoids this ambiguity.

Do not compare min/km directly with min/mile. Convert one into the other first.

Do not treat a faster average as proof that a session was better. This article explains measurement, not the appropriate intensity for your training. Use the numbers to understand a run, then interpret them in its context.
