Running Pace Calculator & Race Splits

Turn a finish-time goal into a pace you can follow. Calculate pace, time or distance, then print your kilometre or mile splits.

How to use the running pace calculator

  1. Choose what to calculate: pace, finish time or distance.
  2. Select kilometres or miles. Choose a race preset or enter your own distance.
  3. Enter the other two values. Use 30:00 for 30 minutes or 2:00:00 for two hours.
  4. Calculate to see both pace units and cumulative splits. Print your pacing card.

A preset half marathon is 21.0975 km; a marathon is 42.195 km. The final split includes the remaining fraction of a kilometre or mile, so the finish matches your target exactly before rounding.

The pace, distance and time formulas

Pace = time ÷ distance. A 30-minute 5K is 30 ÷ 5 = 6:00 per kilometre.

Time = pace × distance. Running 10 km at 6:00/km takes 60 minutes.

Distance = time ÷ pace. Running for 45 minutes at 5:00/km covers 9 km.

One mile is 1.609344 km. Multiply seconds per kilometre by 1.609344 for seconds per mile. The calculator keeps full precision internally and rounds displayed times to the nearest second.

Running pace questions

What pace is a two-hour half marathon?

Two hours over 21.0975 km is about 5:41/km or 9:09/mile. Those rounded paces are approximate: use the cumulative splits above to avoid adding rounding errors at every kilometre.

Is this a race-time predictor?

No. It calculates the relationship between pace, distance and time. It does not use your fitness, training history, hills or weather to predict a race result.

Does the finish time include stops?

Use elapsed time if your goal includes stops. A race clock generally continues during a water stop; a watch’s moving-time pace can therefore be different from your overall pace.

Are the splits even or negative splits?

These are even-pace splits: the same pace throughout, with a shorter final segment where needed. They do not prescribe a pacing strategy for your course.

Can I convert this pace to a treadmill setting?

Yes. Open the treadmill pace calculator to convert minutes per kilometre or mile into km/h or mph.
